But it is also misunderstood, and often romanticized. Michael and Patrick must play the game, evade the monsters, collect their points and make it through the various challenging levels until they reach the game's end. This is the element that immediately sets this book apart from every other dystopia/sci-fi/horror story (or at least the ones that I've read) - the game. The End Games opens up right in the middle of the action, there's barely room to breathe before we are thrown into this dark world of monsters, where two young boys must fight to survive against the odds and make it to the end of the game: the safe zone. This is a very eerie novel, one that is filled with zombie-like creatures called Bellows that moan back your words to you in an elongated, disturbing echo. I love the clever twists that took me completely by surprise, I love the creepy setting and I also love the relationship between Michael and Patrick. Even after taking a few days off from goodreads, I'm still no closer to deciding how I actually feel about it and whether, in the end, I think it's worth recommending to others. The dominant discourse of feminism and lesbian feminism in the 1970s and early 1980s regarded butch/femme communities as incompatible with feminism and marginalized them in lesbian history. Perceptions and discriminationĪlthough working class butch/femme culture was not a simple imitation of heterosexuality, that assumption led to stereotyping and dismissal by many lesbian feminists, the medical establishment, and more affluent gays and lesbians. It also took inspiration from the pink and red lesbian flag. Purple was specifically chosen to match the vibrant orange of the butch flag. The prime movers of the group were Arturo Reghini (1878-1946), a Pythagorean mathematician and reviver of a spiritual Freemasonry, and Julius Evola (1898-1974), then a young philosopher with a precocious mastery of the esoteric doctrines of East and West. The group included a distinguished line-up of occultists, neo-pagans, freemasons, Anthroposophists, orientalists, poets, and members of high society. They produced a monthly journal containing techniques for spiritual realization, accounts of personal experiences, translations of ancient texts, and original essays on esoteric topics. The Borgias face immense opposition from all quarters of Italy, but their deadliest foes may be far closer to home.Ī tale of brutality and betrayal that crowns Mario Puzo's remarkable career Scheming and plotting for their own ends are his children: Giovanni, the much-favoured golden boy his younger brother Cesare, jealous and vicious and Lucrezia, cunning, calculating and passionate. The Renaissance is in full swing, heralding a new golden age for Europe. From the legendary author of THE GODFATHER comes a novel of the original Italian crime familyįifteenth-century Italy. Women and dragons are continuously mistreated and silenced, yet nothing is done to resolve it. I won’t give too much away, but I will say that overall, I was left feeling reasonably disappointed.Īlthough the book has themes of feminism and seems like a larger metaphor for the need to dismantle the patriarchy, little action is done to do so in the story. Even though mothers around the country collectively abandoned their families, everyone refused to speak of it. As the main character Alex grew up, she witnessed “dragonings” and their effects but was forced by her family and society to keep quiet. How did they turn into dragons? Why did they turn into dragons? Where did they go once they turned into dragons? Unfortunately, not many of these questions are answered in the novel. An image like that probably leaves you with a lot of questions. in the 1950s where women who are abused or feel like outcasts turn into dragons. Whether that is a good or bad thing is for you to decide. Although, yes, some women are dragons, I wouldn’t consider the story a traditional fantasy. Before all fantasy haters leave the page, this book is not quite what you expect. Hello, and welcome to another I’m Booked review!
